I would like to start a few new students and welcome any returns who have a project they feel they want me to over see. What ever it is you want to pursue in art I am here to help you to learn and to improve. Of course as you might expect a lot of my students go on to outdo the work of the teacher but that is wonderful. If you want to paint with me I only ask that you have some thing to show me if you are already working in art or if you just want to get started, show me something you find interesting so I can see where your "art" thoughts are. Is this my last cheese burger painting? No I am sure it is not although it might be senseless to get much larger. This canvas is 48 inches wide and 36 inches high. I just know I could do better but this is so fun! Why paint if it doesn't make you happy. No one is buying anyway ! The next one has got to be bigger then this.

"The Narrow path" or "Adoni" People tell me that it look so much better when they see the real thing. Some thing happens to the eyes when you photograph this. The textures were so enjoyable to paint, but you sure can't see it on here. 22 x 28

The area surrounding my home has so much beauty through out the year. This is adjacent to property I used to own. When I was growing up we skated this creek every winter and the ice seemed to be 6 inches thick. My dad skated in those days but he is 92 now. this piece is 8 inches x 10 inches and like most of the photos on this blog it looks much better when you see the actual piece.

Yes these are chickens. If I had my way the yard would be full of them and I would never buy another egg. Not what I consider a pet you can have a relationship with but people all over the country are starting to make pets of them. This is dedicated to Katie my Godchild and niece.

birds are so interesting. ....and no this is not a painting of a chicken. There have actually been eagles that have landed in my own back yard since I live rather close to the river where they like to fish. I was surprised at how large they really are. Having had Macaw parrots I would not want to tangle with an Eagle beak.

"Frosty Morning" My 2010 winter scene, I painted this from a photo I purchased at a family estate auction. Having spent many hours in the past with sled dogs in the snow I could feel the cold of this still winter morning. Every year I paint a winter scene with snow but this is the first one that does not have snow on the tree limbs.

It's possible that I have too many favorites. This painting was listed previously but this is completed now. " The Helping hand" by french painter Emile Renouf. Of course this one is my copy. It looks so good in my living room.

One nice thing about working in art renovation is that you learn to paint like a lot of other people. Maybe that inders the ability to have a style of your own but for an art lover like myself it means if I want it I can just paint it. This print was at the Library in the art for loan dept. I loved the light in the back ground so I borrowed it and painted my own. too bad it's so hard to photograph flat canvas because it is so nice to look at this. I know this is a copy but I still enjoy it immensely and I still feel the light.

My own Picasso! The only painting I have ever copied by Picasso and I just love it. This version measures only 16 x 20 inches and I have it framed like it was the real thing. It might be one of my favorite paintings. Have I said that before? The copy had to take a lot longer then it did for Pablo to do it originally. They used to say that Picasso made art every single day of his life and some times did more then one. it is also known that he is the wealthiest artist to ever live. Most artist see very little in their lifetimes and only after production is halted due to their death do buyers pay the higher prices for their works.

Some how nature reclaims what is hers. This did not turn out like I pictured it in my mind but I still like the whole idea. This canvas sat around for many years before I stopped to complete it. It's not for everybody but then you can't just make art that pleases everyone. There is beauty in the wonder of the structure of mankind.

No mater how many times I start to clean my studio some thing happens and by the end of the day I have made a larger path and spent hours playing around with things I had forgotten I had. Now don't feel sorry for me because I have a large studio built just for that purpose. I have equipment for jewelry making and casting. a kiln and potters wheel and easels stretcher parts and drafting supplies and even a work bench area for basic repair projects . .......It's all there but it looks like a storage building with all of the other things that conveniently get dumped off in there by myself and others. Fortunately I am single and do not have to get scolded for taking over the house too. A mess is not always good......

"My kid could do that"

Any one who wants to keep an open mind about art needs to check out this story. I got the Video from the county library and really feel it was time well spent. Marla is the little girl in the story and while they claim she made over 300,000 dollars with her paintings the story raises a lot of points. Does who did the work make a difference? most of us in our right mind know that this is usually true. I mean come on Picasso could do no wrong!!!

Marla was creating some amazing work that they just couldn't seem to capture on film. Many claim she was coached. You need to be the judge too.

Ruby the elephant painted too and now there are all sorts of Elephants and monky's painting. Did that diminish their value because they were no longer a phenomenon?

the ultimate easel

For over 20 years I have been stopping now and then to devise ways of making my easel more functional. Tired of painting on my lap I came up with an idea to make my easel into a rotary easel. now that may not be a new concept but I made my own version that fits right on any large easel in place of a 48 inch canvas. From there you attach your canvas and then rotate it as needed. It stops at points 7.5 degrees apart and you can turn your canvas in a complete circle.
As if that was not good enough after 3 years of use I added a system to instantly attach a canvas instead of having to tighten it in the Rotary unit the way I originally did.
That was a nice improvement.
but larger canvas are tough when you have limited work space. This lead me to build a track that held the rotary unit and that track fits into the larger studio easel in place of a canvas. This track is made to hold the rotary unit on wheels which allows you to move the canvas (once mounted) to the right or the left. No longer do I need to move my stool. Now one day to build the whole thing from scratch as one unit. I can't wait !

Canvas Mate II

It's finally completed and ready to market. The "Canvas Mate II" is an artist dream come true. At least for Artist who use photos or drawings as reference for their paintings.
Not sure yet what these will have to sell for but if you want one pre- production let me know and I will work some thing out. There is a photo here if you can understand what it does. I will be adding a picture showing it in use very soon. The unit is compact and all wood construction except for screws bolts and the clip of course. Best of all made by hand in the USA

Giclee prints coming soon

A few have asked about the possibility of purchasing prints of some of my paintings. After researching the 19 color printing process I have found a company who will reproduce paintings and produce what is known as a Giclee print. The color is nearly perfect and they are all signed and numbered by the artist making them valuable as art prints.
I can tell you first hand that they look great.

Art Instruction

Steve Terry loves Art Education. Instruction in Oil Painting, Drawing in Pencil and Ink, Sculpture or any other discipline can be arranged on an individual basis or as a group. The Studio is currently undergoing some renovations and then more students will be able to attend. If Art history is your thing I have a large art DVD collection.
No age is too young as long as there is desire. The same goes for older students. You simply must want to learn and you'll see how quickly I can get results for you. It is never too late.
Not only will you become a better artist many of my younger students go on to earn scholarships and find satisfying careers in the art field. That's more then I can say !
There are no set prices as everyone's ability to pay is different.
There are Kilns, Potter's Wheels as well as a complete Jewelry Casting Shop. One-on-one instruction means you get the help to achieve your personal goals

a great way to see a Museum Gallery

One really interesting way to look at Art if you are not feeling like you are knowledgable is to look at it in terms with which you are familiar. Believe me it adds so much to the experience and gives the viewer a reason to look and think about each art work.
In each gallery you can look to see paintings that you can list as :
1. The Best Idea
2. Your personal favorite painting or work of art in the
Gallery
3. the Most Valuable Painting or art work in the gallery
4. One art work you would like to have in your home
5. The one art work in the gallery that should be shared with
the whole world in a
museum .
All of the rules and ideals in the art world mean little unless you understand and appreciate them. That doesn't mean art can't be a great and exciting experience with out that knowledge. As they say ....."I know what I like"
